Preface
Science and literature are often treated as two separate worlds. One deals in facts and experiments, while the other engages with stories and meaning. Yet history reveals a rich and enduring relationship between these fields. Darwin’s On the Origin of Species was written with literary skill, while poets and writers have long used biological ideas to explore love, death, change, and what it means to be human.
Biological Science and Literature: Recent Advances & Interdisciplinary Approach brings together scholars, scientists, and literary critics whose work occupies this productive intersection. The chapters explore genetics, ecology, evolutionary theory, neuroscience, chemical science, and medicine alongside poetry, fiction, drama, and literary theory.
The volume examines the ways biological knowledge shapes literary imagination and how literary and narrative forms influence the production, communication, and understanding of scientific knowledge. In an era of gene editing, artificial life, pandemics, and ecological crises, literature provides an important means through which societies process and question scientific change.
The contributors present close literary readings informed by scientific literacy, scientific arguments attentive to narrative and rhetoric, and interdisciplinary approaches that resist straightforward classification. The collection seeks to demonstrate that meaningful work at the intersection of biology and literature can create new modes of inquiry attentive to both empirical rigour and the complexity of human meaning-making.
The editors express their gratitude to all contributors and reviewers whose scholarship, guidance, and commitment made this collection possible. The volume seeks to unsettle familiar disciplinary boundaries, provoke new questions, and encourage fresh dialogue between biological science and literature.
